donated the safe to Sycamore Square in June of 2000 after they moved to Dupont Street. On the top ledge it reads Newman & Howard. Knowing there was a Newman law firm in Sycamore Square in 1890 makes me wonder if it was originally delivered to this building.
Some time after that the business was sold to Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Co. Edward, William, and Charles (sons of Joseph L. Hall) formed a new corporation in September 1896, titled the Hall's Safe Company. The Hall's Safe Company was then sued by Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Co. over the 'trademarks" "HALL'S SAFE" it went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in January 30, 1908. Court decision was in favor of HERRING-HALL-MARVIN SAFE CO. and the Hall brother could not continue with the company of The HALL'S SAFE COMPANY. I am currently looking for more information about this safe and its owners. |
